Update has caused many problems. How can I roll back?

Post by colinmcc »

I have a mint box pro with cinemon desktop that has been working fine until today when I let it do an update by clicking on the little icon to the bottom right of my desktop. I hadn't done that for a while so it took nearly an hour.

About half way through a message box came up asking something like 'Do you want to overwrite grub with the one contained in the package maintainers update?'

I clicked on continue, and eventually the update finished. After a reboot everything has changed, my icons are in different places and are grey, my desktop looks totally different!

And, worst of all, my left hand monitor a DP++ unit on which I had set rotate Clockwise to view long documents is no longer rotated! When I go to Applications>System Tools>System settings and select Displays, I am given the option to rotate it and when I select for example rotate>Clockwise, I am first told:

The selected configuration for displays could not be applied
with a smaller message: could not set the configuration for CRTC 72.

If I click on close I get another message box saying:

Failed to apply configuration: %s
with a smaller message:
GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._gnome_2drr_2derror_2dquark.Code2: could not set the configuration for CRTC 72

I'm guessing that the update included for some reason the package maintainer's personal settings and that I now have their computer's settings pointing at their drivers which are not right for the mint box.

I desparately need to revert back to my own pre-update settings, desktop etc, how can I do this?

Thank you!

I also posted about this at the linux mint forum, rather than my repeating myself here with the saga so far please visit :

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 72#p681172

To see that after 6 hours + I stlll haven't resolved the problem! In fact I now just have both screens mirrored and can't even split the desktop. This is however better than a couple of hours ago when the mouse pointer vanished.. :x

I think(?) that I need a new set of ATI drivers installed to match the Mint Box, and a matching X configuration file, so they all play nicely. And I haven't even started to work out why a simply saying yes to an update this morning changed my desktop, icons, colors etc!

Thank you,

Colin

Dear Colin

Have you tried to manually update the fglrx drivers?

Please try

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates

Dear gabrielh

Following another reply from you on this forum I have tried:

sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates xvba-va-driver vainfo

Which resulted in:

Code: Select all

colin@Mint-Box-Pro ~ $ sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates xvba-va-driver vainfo
[sudo] password for colin:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

So I ran: sudo dpkg --configure -a

Code: Select all

colin@Mint-Box-Pro ~ $ sudo dpkg --configure -a

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libsdl-mixer1.2 libmikmod2

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 25 not upgraded.

I restarted the mint box pro, and my screens are both 'on' but are mirrored.

If I go to Menu>System Tools>System Settings>Displays I see the mirrored box is ticked. If I untick it then small icons of both my screens show up but clicking apply causes both screens to go black, and after waiting for several minutes for the screens to reappear I hit the power switch to turn the mint box pro off and reboot. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Which may help?

All my icons are still different from before, both in cinnamon panel and file manager, firefox, gimp etc, I am very wary of EVER using the update feature again!

Thanks for your help, and yes, I still need to 'fix' the displays at least, I can live with the icons for now. I am lost with only one screen.

Re: Update has caused many problems. How can I roll back?

Post by colinmcc »

Well, I'm running out of ideas! After nearly two days I still can't un-mirror my screens let alone rotate one.

Since this month's LFX magazine has feature article on the mint box and mint, with a bootable coverdisk of mint 14 I thought I'd boot from it and see if A. It works, and B if both monitors are working properly I'd copy the x config file created and try that.

BUT..

I put the cover disk in an external usb drive, plug it in and reboot.

I get the select a live distro menu from the disk as expected, ( so USB ports are enabled, and boot from USB too) BUT... at that point in the sequence I'm told to move through the options with my tab key but my USB keyboard is disabled and so my tab key, enter key etc do not work!

I've found on occasion in the past with other older hardware that I had to plug in a PS2 keyboard if I wanted to interrupt a boot sequence before the USB drivers were active, but since the mint box has no ps2, and the boot from the external USB drive is working I am at a loss.

So, I sit there looking at all these live distros to try but am unable to select or try one! ;-(

All I can do at that point is hit the power switch to shut down, unplug the drive then boot again as normal, back into my defective installation.

I have now also tried booting with cover disks from other LFX mags and Linux Pro Magazine, same problem, no keyboard active to continue once the menu comes up.

Have you any advice as to why/how to enable my keyboard before the cover disk splash screen comes up?

Thanks

Edit: Gooling leads me to this https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782347

Which indicates it has been a known bug for some time. Yet another thing that needs 'fixing'..

Did you try to plug the keyboard in a different USB port?

I have no problem booting and using USB DVD drives or flashdrives. My keyboard is attached to one of the back USB2 ports, the ones between line-in and rj-45. Don't use any USB3 ports.

Jean, Thanks..That's where my keybd is plugged in, the cd/dvd drive is in one of the front ones.

I made sure that legacy mode is enabled in the bios. I also notice that on boot up with no external drive enabled I also can't move up/down the grub boot menu since my keyboard doesn't work at that point. So I can't move down to select recovery mode or mem test for example. (Before the 'upgrade' I never saw that menu(?) )

I have to wait 'till the countdown timer gets to zero then boot continues.

On the other matter:

Using the AMD catalyst control center I have managed to split my screens (they are no longer mirrored, although I can't do that from the System Settings> Display menu), and rotate the DP++ one, BUT: Applications eg firefox open and fit full screen on the DP++ screen, ditto on the hdmi screen, yet the desktop background image on the dp++ screen floods half way over the hdmi screen.

gabrielh is there a help line I can call and perhaps arrange to have/purchase a new hard drive with fresh install of the OS? I'm beginning to think that Thursdays 'update' trashed this OS beyond the point where I with my limited knowledge can 'fix' it .. I really don't want to have to buy 'another' mint box pro to get a working one.

Since the keyboard issue means I can't boot/reload from a new version on CD/DVD even that option is closed.

PS Just rebooted the mint box... After reboot the screens have become mirrored again, as per the System Settings> Display menu setting I couldn't change before. :x

Had to go into the AMD Catalyst Control Center and change it all again..

Now I don't dare update or reboot!!! :x :x :x

Dear Colin

I suggest you to make a fresh install of Linux Mint 13. We will thoroughly investigate the update issue with a dual head setup, and I will update you with our conclusions.
