When I installed using the generic 8.04 LTS instructions from this forum, the first thing I need to do after the installation in do a "sudo apt-get update" but the wireless LAN in not functional. When I look at the lans that are available there is the point to point and the wired. Is the wireless active in the generic install? Thanks in advance.

No, the wireless drivers are not available in the generic install.
I recommend downloading all the packages manually from
http://fit-pc2.com/download/ubuntu/dists/hardy/binary/
and then transfer them to the fitpc via usb pen drive.
Then do a sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.24-34-fitpc2_2.6.24-34.10
(hopefully all dependencies are then downloaded in the previous step, if not some extra work might have to be done).
After that reboot and your wireless should work.
