I have two identical Fitlet-X-LAN Barebone machines. They are running Debian 8.0 "Jessie" with Xen server set up using identical configurations.
One of the machines has a USB 3 RAID enclosure plugged into the rear USB 3 port (Startech S3520BU33ER) with 2x 2Tb drives in it.
On the machine with the RAID drive plugged in, the rear ethernet port does not work. dmesg shows the following:
[ 11.793728] igb: Intel(R) Gigabit Ethernet Network Driver - version 5.0.5-k

lspci shows the port:
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation I211 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation I211 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation I211 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation I211 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)
Since the machines are identical setups, I've tried unplugging the RAID, and swapping it from one machine to the other. If I unplug it and reboot, the port works. If I move the RAID to the other machine, the rear port on that machine doesn't work.
It's not 100% repeatable: I have seen cases where the port fails without the RAID plugged in. In some cases, the port doesn't even get probed during boot, there is no mention of PCI 04:00.0 at all in dmesg or lspci output. In those cases, I have to disconnect power and reconnect in order to get the port to re-appear.
Any ideas?
I've searched quite a bit, and have seen mention of a possible igb driver checksum issues, but that seemed to affect the other ports.
Fitlet-X-LAN Ethernet port doesn't work if USB RAID plugged
Re: Fitlet-X-LAN Ethernet port doesn't work if USB RAID plug
I've tried a few things now, but the situation is, if anything, worse. The rear port is now not appearing in the dmesg logs or lspci, even with the USB disk unplugged. I successfully flashed BIOS SBCFLT_0.08.08, but that didn't change anything. I've tried tweaking a couple of options in the BIOS without change, but I can't see any settings that look like they would make any difference.
Is there anything else I should do to diagnose a failed ethernet port before asking Compulab for a replacement?
